About OET (Occupational English Test)

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an internationally recognized English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It evaluates the language communication skills of candidates who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking healthcare environment.

OET is tailored to reflect real workplace scenarios that healthcare professionals encounter daily, making it highly relevant and practical. The test assesses your ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and other professionals in a medical setting.

Global Recognition

OET is recognized and trusted by regulatory healthcare boards and councils in several countries, including:

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

  • Singapore

  • Dubai (UAE)

  • United Kingdom

  • Ireland

  • Ukraine

In addition to professional registration, OET scores are accepted for immigration purposes, including work visas and student visas in many of these countries. Universities and healthcare employers also accept OET results as proof of English proficiency and communication ability, especially in clinical contexts.

OET Test Format

The OET exam consists of four sub-tests, each focusing on a different skill:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

What sets OET apart is that the content of each sub-test is profession-specific. For example, a nurse will take tests with language relevant to nursing, while a doctor will face scenarios related to medicine.

OET Scoring System

Each sub-test is graded on a scale from A to E, with A being the highest.

Grade Description of Ability
A Very high level of performance
B High level of performance; can use English fluently and accurately for professional needs
C Good performance, but below the standard required by many health councils
D Moderate performance; significant improvement needed
E Low performance; extensive improvement required

To pass the OET and be eligible for professional registration or visa application, a minimum score of ‘B’ in each of the four sub-tests is generally required. The test results are valid for up to 2 years.
