Learn About the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely recognized and accepted English language proficiency tests in the world. Designed specifically for non-native English speakers, the test measures a candidate’s ability to use and understand English in an academic setting.

Administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the TOEFL is accepted by over 11,000 universities and institutions across more than 150 countries—including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and many more.

Originally introduced in 1964, the TOEFL has helped over 20 million students showcase their English proficiency and gain admission to top universities worldwide.

What Does the TOEFL Test Assess?

The TOEFL exam evaluates your skills in four core areas of the English language:

  • Reading – Comprehension of academic texts and passages

  • Listening – Understanding spoken English in lectures and conversations

  • Speaking – Expressing ideas clearly and effectively in spoken English

  • Writing – Writing well-structured essays and responses in English

These components reflect real-life academic situations that students may face in a university environment, making the TOEFL highly relevant for academic readiness.

Test Format & Duration

The TOEFL is primarily conducted as a computer-based test (TOEFL iBT), though paper-based versions are available in select locations. The iBT (Internet-Based Test) format is the preferred and most widely available version.

  • Test Duration: Approximately 4 hours

  • Frequency: Can be taken once every 3 days, up to 5 times in 12 months

  • Validity: TOEFL scores remain valid for 2 years

  • Test Availability: Offered at official test centers worldwide and at home via the TOEFL iBT Home Edition

Why Take the TOEFL?

  • Mandatory for Admissions: Required by nearly all U.S. universities and many other institutions globally for admission of international students

  • Trusted by Institutions: One of the earliest indicators of a student’s readiness to study in an English-speaking environment

  • Accepted Worldwide: Recognized by top academic institutions, immigration departments, and professional licensing agencies
