What is CELPIP?

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a Canada-based English language proficiency test designed for individuals aiming to immigrate, work, or settle in Canada. It evaluates a candidate’s ability in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking through a computer-based format. The CELPIP test is officially recognized by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

There are two types of CELPIP tests:

• CELPIP General:
  This test assesses all four language skills and is ideal for those applying for Permanent Residency in Canada. It is IRCC-approved and widely accepted.

• CELPIP General LS:
  Focused on Listening and Speaking, this version is required for Canadian Citizenship applications. It is also approved by IRCC.

CELPIP Exam Pattern

As there are two different versions of the CELPIP exam, the structure and duration vary accordingly. Below is a quick overview:

CELPIP General Test Format

• Duration: Approximately 3 hours

• Components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – all conducted in one sitting

• Listening Section: Includes 8 parts; only 7 are presented during the test, and one is unscored (used for test development)

• Unscored Items: May be present in Listening and Reading without prior notice

• Total Length: About 180 minutes

CELPIP General LS Test Format

• Duration: Around 1 hour and 10 minutes

• Components: Listening and Speaking only

CELPIP Registration Process

Candidates can register for the CELPIP exam online. Before registering, ensure that you have:

• A valid government-issued ID (especially for test-takers outside Canada)

• A valid payment method (Credit/Debit card or online payment)

• A selected test date and preferred center
